That Time A Member Cried in My Pilates Class

Hi everyone!  It’s Katie.

Today, I wanted to share with you a story about something that happened to a member during one of my recent Pilates classes. It was really impactful, and I thought it was important to share – and I am hoping you will see why after you read it.

It was the end of class.  I looked over, scanning the room as I always do to check in on everyone, and I noticed there were tears in one of the member’s eyes. For the sake of this story, we will call her Tammy. I didn’t want to say anything in front of the class, so I kept going to close things off.

I had everyone curl into a child’s pose (shell stretch as we call it in Pilates) talking everyone through the last moments.

Afterwards, when the other participants had packed up and gone, I approached Tammy to see if she needed any support and to make sure she was okay

“NO! I am great!” she said with a big smile on her face. I was confused for a moment, but luckily she kept explaining.

“I looked in the mirror while I was standing and it was the first time in a long time that I liked what I saw. My back looks really different. I look less hunched over. And even better, I can do a swan stretch without feeling pain – I actually feel good while doing it. And I am really grateful.”  she said.

I instantly felt a wave of joy.

“My pleasure!’ I beamed at Tammy.  “You put in a lot of work, so you should definitely take credit for it and be proud of yourself. I gave you tools but you had to do all the hard work of showing up!”

These kinds of moments are highlights for me in my teaching career: when a student see the results and feel better about themselves! Tammy had been coming to my classes for just over a year at this point, and we had also begun working one on one together. She really wanted to straighten her back and feel better.  We didn’t start training with the goal of changing her appearance.

But – as she continued to feel stronger and see improvements in her mobility, she started to like what she saw in the mirror even more because she had gained confidence and felt connected with her body!
